New Drivers Make Great Gifts

By Hal Quinn

One of the oldest and longest held axioms of the game –”Drive for show, putt for dough.”– coined by the late, great putter Bobby Locke, was as well and truly retired by the club-makers this year. Emphatically, the driver is now the most important club in the bag. So, one of the new beasts is high on every golfer’s wish list.

Callaway really kicked off 2017 with the EPIC driver and what it calls Jail Break technology. Average and good players, alike, noticed it immediately– shooting EPIC drivers to the top of the sales charts. Later in the year, Callaway introduced the STAR driver for golfers with slower swing speeds and, let’s say, more experience than the young bucks. It’s ideal for many players I know. www.callaway.com.

At the top of the price scale there’s always the new PXG 0811 LX at about $700 at www.pxg.com. Then there’s TaylorMade’s M1 and M2, topped off by M4—just in time for Christmas. www.taylormadegolf.com.

Also, right at the shopping deadline is the 2018 Cobra F8 and F8+ with milled faces.  This is just one up from the F7’s of course. www.cobragolf.com.

Out there, still glistening among others, is the PING G 400 at www.ping.com, and the Titleist 917 D2 and D3 models at www.titelist.com. They’re the gifts that give distance and control—even though they are so hard to wrap.
