Professional Golf Comes to the Pacific Northwest

August in the Pacific Northwest welcomes not only the LPGA, Tour, but also the Champions Tour to the region. If you’re a fan of watching the world’s best golfers, August is about as good as it gets. Starting out with the WinCo Foods Portland Open, slated for August 24th to 27th, golfers will be vying for one of 25 PGA TOUR cards at Witch Hollow Course at Pumpkin Ridge. Former Oregon Ducks standout and recipient of the individual title at the 2016 NCAA Championship, Aaron Wise is scheduled to also play in front of his home crowd.

The next event on the card is the Boeing Classic, August 25th through the 27th, the perennial favorite for Seattle-area fans and the best opportunity to watch pro golfers in the twilight of their careers walk the fairways of The Club at Snoqualmie Ridge. New players to watch for this year include Vijay Singh and Miguel Ángel Jiménez, and, of course, defending champion Bernhard Langer will be duking it out with hometown favorite Fred Couples—assuming ‘Boom Boom’ can stay healthy, that is.

Finally, the world’s best female golfers converge on Portland to contest the 2017 Cambia Portland Classic held August 28th to September 3rd, at the Columbia Edgewater Country Club. Can defending champ Brooke Henderson from north of the border successfully defend her title? We’ll have to wait and see, but she loves this golf course and seems to always be threatening the leader board on Sunday.

Of course, our August issue wouldn’t be the August issue unless it was dedicated to showcasing the Boeing Classic and interviewing the defending champion.   In fact, we caught up with legend Bernhard Langer for an exclusive interview for Golf Today and by all accounts he is hungry for a repeat performance. In eight appearances, Langer has earned five top-ten finishes and two wins. Not bad, right? In addition, we look at Five Players to Watch including the exciting Spaniard Miguel Ángel Jiménez, World Golf Hall of Famer José María Olazábal, Jesper Parnevik, Kenny Perry, and Moses Lake native Kirk Triplett. We invite you to enjoy this month’s issue and please share it with your golfing friends! If you have a story idea or just want to tell us about your recent low round, ace, or other golf-related story, please drop me a line! Cheers!
